Bikeability case study – Witney Community Primary

cottsway-logo-no_ha_jpeg 2007With funding from Cottsway Housing Association’s Well Community Fund we have been able to extend our Bikeability training.  Since February we have trained 49 children from both Year 5 and Year 6 in Bikeability Levels 1 and 2.

In March we ran a highly successful Cycle Ability day with years 2, 3 and 4.  90 children participated in workshops on playground cycle skills, bike checks and pumping up tyres, and mountain bike games on the field.  Here is a flavour of what we got up to.  http://www.witneycommunityprimaryschool.org.uk/classes1516/year3/12_cycling/index.html. We rounded off with an assembly where they watched 2 short films about Bikeability and did a question and answer on the benefits of cycling.  Needless to say they identified lots of benefits that we hadn’t thought of!

In July we will be taking a group of Year 6 students on a tailor made ‘safe routes to school’ course. We will discuss the best ways to get to Wood Green school where they will be starting in September, and ride the route with them.

We hope to be able to replicate this approach where children develop their cycling skills, road confidence and knowledge, enabling them to make active travel choices both at Primary and Secondary school.

Thank you Cottsway Housing Association for supporting this project.
